I Love To Singa - 1936

Arlen and Harburg originally wrote the tune for the 1936 Warner Bros. feature-length film The Singing Kid. It is performed three times in the film: first by Al Jolson and Cab Calloway, then by the Yacht Club Boys and Jolson, and finally again by Calloway and Jolson.
During this period, it was customary for Warners to have their animation production partner, Leon Schlesinger Productions, make Merrie Melodies cartoons based upon songs from their features. One of the resulting short subjects, I Love to Singa, was directed by Tex Avery and released by Warners on July 18, 1936. The cartoon, one of the earliest Merrie Melodies produced in Technicolor, is recognized as one of Avery's early masterpieces.

This cartoon has an extended Apache Dance as the stage show which some might find distasteful. The Apache Dance is named after the nickname of Parisian street gang members, Apaches and was first introduced at the beginning of the 20th century. The music usually associated with it (not here) is from Offenbach's ballet Valse des Rayons used in a 1908 production at the Moulin Rouge.

In this cartoon a nightclub is staffed and frequented entirely by insects. Lighting is provided by fireflies and card games are dealt by centipedes. Everyone dances, even the snails, as the orchestra plays jazz on their instruments made of flowers.

This is the original unedited R-K-O Radio Pictures release. Selective editing was done on the revised United Artist version of this cartoon. During the Apache Dance, the male fly's smoking was kept in but the female's was edited out. A black doorman and some black grasshoppers were also edited out although some racial stereotypes, typical of the era, were retained.

This is basically two jazz-inclined musical shorts in one. First is a swingin' rendition of "The House That Jack Built" boasting imaginative animation in which the writing of a word turns into its meaning (such as "cow" turning into a cow, and so on). Second and longer is "Old McDonald Had a Band", where instrument sounds replace the traditional barnyard noises. With the exception of his displeased wife, Old Mac's family all jams on musical instruments, even the pets.

"Scrub Me Mama with a Boogie Beat" is a 1940 hit boogie-woogie song written by Don Raye. A bawdy, jazzy tune, the song describes a laundry woman from Harlem, New York whose technique is so unusual that people come from all around just to watch her scrub. The Andrews Sisters and Will Bradley & His Orchestra recorded the most successful pop versions of the song, but it is today best recognized as the centerpiece of an eponymous Walter Lantz Studio cartoon from 1941.

The short, released on March 28, 1941 by Universal Pictures features no director credit (Walter Lantz claims to have directed the cartoon himself), with a story by Ben Hardaway, animation by Alex Lovy and Frank Tipper, and voice work by Mel Blanc. The short is awash with blackface stereotypes of African American people and culture, and of life in the rural Southern United States.

The Scrub Me Mama short is today in the public domain. Clips from it are featured in Spike Lee's 2000 satirical film about African-American stereotypes, Bamboozled.
